Minister Avcı receives teachers coming from 81 provinces

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı has received teachers coming from 81 provinces of Turkey at the Başkent Teachers Guest House. Noting that National Schools were opened on November 24, 1928 and Gazi Mustafa Kemal had undertaken the mission of headmaster on the same day, Minister Avcı greeted all teachers with respect. Minister Avcı added that verses from the Koran were recited in Imam Hatip Schools of Turkey today for the souls of all teachers who passed away.

Noting that recently the sentence “the World has changed” has become one of the most frequently used terms, Minister Avcı said, “I want to make a joke but I am hesitant. All my jokes have become controversial. But as I think about it, let me say it, the world is changing, it is changing so rapidly that it is changing quicker than even the Ministry of National Education. This can be used as a measurement showing the pace of the change in the world.”

Minister Avcı said one of the most quickly transforming aspects of the changing World is education and added that school and teacher which were accepted as the “one and only” sources of information and knowledge in the past has lost this identity.

Noting that children are receiving information from many other sources than school, Minister Avcı stated, “Our priority in schools shifted from giving information to training and teaching manners. We have turned into training teachers rather than providing just knowledge. We have to focus on providing training about values.”

“Every teacher is a trainer of values, too. Mathematics teacher, physics teacher, music teacher, gym teacher and class teacher is a tutor at the same time,” Minister Avcı said.

Due to great transformation in the education technologies, education systems require redesigning, said Minister Avcı and underlined the fact that the education process designed for agricultural and industrial societies became null.

Minister Avcı mentioned about a retired teacher who recited Ceyhun Atıf Kansu’s famous poem entitled, “All the Flowers of the World” and noted that the poem talks about village schools, villages and rural life.

Minister Avcı noted that this poem was written while a great majority of the Turkish population was still living in villages and education of village children were among the most prior issues of the country.

“Every day I am signing a document allocating an empty village school to local administrations”

Noting that the poem has reflected the soul of its period beautifully, Minister Avcı said, “Today, everything has changed. Today, great majority of our population is living in the cities leaving villages and village schools empty. As the Minister of National Education, I am signing a document allocating an empty village school to local administrations, every day.”

Minister Avcı said that changing conditions have forced harmonization of education and education strategies according to the requirements of today’s conditions adding that, “Today’s demands are not the same with the demands of yesterday. We cannot answer today’s questions with the answers of yesterday.”

Minister Avcı stated that it is an obligation for Turkey to revise its processes concerning education as a requirement of current conditions such as increasing urban population, increasing variety of information sources and this is what the Ministry is doing.

Noting that the Ministry has developed institutions and processes within this framework, Minister Avcı said that the most recent example of this effort is the Education Information Network (EIN).

 “Transformation of schools will continue”

Minister Avcı stressed that EIN is the biggest education portal of the World and efforts of the Ministry and teachers have an important impact in the success of EIN in capturing the soul of our century.

Noting that schools have transformed and will continue to transform, Minister Avcı said, “Both the architecture and financial models of schools will change. Responsibilities of teachers and the executive will go through a transformation and even they might increase. But we will surely form the education architecture that will fulfill the requirements of our century.”

Minister Avcı stated that the Ministry has taken important steps within this framework and has solved a majority of the problems concerning the infrastructure and will continue to do so adding that the average number of students in classrooms has been dropped to 24 in many provinces and districts of Anatolia.

Minister Avcı said despite all these are positive developments there is still a lot of work ahead of the Ministry and noted, “We have doubled the number of teachers in the last 12 years and this figure will continue to increase. But numerical growth is not enough; we have to enhance ourselves in terms of quality, too. And, we are doing that. We will improve the  current quality of teachers with the will of Allah with our programs such as Teacher Strategy Document and Teacher Academy Project. We have to achieve this goal, or else we will be an embracement for our children.”

“Teaching is a blind love“

Retired teacher Halil Şenyüz said during his speech during the visit that teaching resembles a blind love adding that teaching is a profession that brings livelihood to people. Meanwhile, teacher Yahya Özkök recited Ceyhun Atıf Kansu’s renowned poem, “All the Flowers of the World.”

Following the program, Minister Avcı presented gifts to teachers from the 81 provinces of the country.
