Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı attended the International Conference organized as a part of “Students are Learning the European Union” Project. Speaking at the opening of the international conference held under the title of “Common Values of Turkey and the European Union: Reflections to the Education System” Minister Avcı said the conference was organized during a period when ongoing full membership negotiations between Turkey and the European Union regained momentum.

“Our friends in Europe have the opportunity to see that safety of the European Continent begins in Anatolia during the refugee crisis. They once more see that Turkey is part of the destiny of the continent. I hope that our negotiations will continue with this pace and the EU will lift all the barriers in front of Turkey’s full membership following a fair and rightful process in line with the universal principles declared by the EU,” said Minister Avcı.

“The EU needs to get to know and understand us”

“We can only describe the process that begins with Turkey’s application for membership and continues today with the mental berries formed due to political reasons,” stated Avcı “It is our right to expect cooperation and solidarity in the level of harmony we have shown to union acquis. While we continue to learn more about the EU, the EU needs to get to know and understand us”.

Minister Avcı said that he hoped that the conference will help Turkey to explain itself and allow the people of the EU member countries to get to know Turkey.

“We live in the soil where the values defended by EU was born, boomede and spread”

Underlining that the fact that relations between Turkey and EU have a deep history, Minister Avcı said, “We are no stranger to the norms and standards defended by Europe and the EU. On the contrary, we live in the soil where the values defended by EU were born, boom and spread. We have more experience in some vital issues such as pluralism, harmonious blending of different cultures.”

Minister Avcı stressed that Turkey has enough experience in the field of education and they have been closely following the universal principles and added that graduates of schools in Turkey show important success in universities all over the world and work under the roof of leading companies in all sectors.

Universal and national values do not contradict

Reminding Nobel chemistry award winner Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar’s speech noting that he owes his success to the education he had received in Turkey, Minister Avcı went on to say that, “I believe that this speech has eliminated a number of false assumptions about our education system. Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar revealed with in his speech that a person can address both local and national values while receiving an international award. It shows that these two characteristics of education do not contradict with each other. On the contrary, they support and enrich each other. If you feel as a son of a certain country and adopt its values, you do not neglect the knowledge of humanity.”

Minister Avcı said that they are open to all kinds of cooperation and interaction for the development of science, education and arts as a part of big family of human beings and they have no reservation or fear about this issue adding that this conference is among the indicators of their good will and wish for cooperation.

Reminding that Head of the EU Delegation to Turkey Ambassador Hansjörg during his speech during the conference stated that the Europe and Turkey will make a final decision at the end of negotiation process, Minister Avcı said, “It is correct, we will make a decision eventually. Words of Kavakis will show us a path during making this decision.”

After recalling that he had quoted the “İthaka” poem during the opening speech on the project, Minister Avcı ended his speech by reciting Constantinos Kavafis’s “Ithaka” poem.
