An important boost in vocational and technical education

Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı during his speech during a ceremony held on the occasion of the employment of intern students as a part of “Project for Fulfillment of Qualified Human Resources Demand in the Rail System Sector” at the Turkish Locomotive Industry Inc. said that that the number of vocational and technical training schools which was around a thousand and 900 in 2002 currently exceeded 4 thousand and the number of teachers employed in these schools which was 15 thousand rose to 62 thousand.

Noting that not only quantitate but also qualitative developments have been seen in this field, Minister Avcı stated, “Today, we are experiencing one of the most obscure examples of this. I would like to thank all stakeholders and experts of the project. It is important for our students who participated in this program that they should know this fact: you are going to be interns in one of the well rooted industrial organizations of Turkey. This is a 121 year old national company. During your training, you will have the chance to see the importance of corporate culture.”

Minister Avcı stressed that people have been frequently mentioning the need for qualified staff adding that, “Sector players have been complaining that they have difficulty in finding well educated key staff to employ. There is an intensive need for staff that would represent the whole body. There is such a need in every sector. There is an intensive need for well-educated qualified staff while there is an immense unemployment issue among young people. There is a paradox, here. While employers seek well-educated qualified personnel, our youngsters are having difficulty in finding jobs. So, our mission is to bring the sector and young people’s needs together. Due to this reason, this is an important project for us. We will have the opportunity to expand this project to the whole of the country as there is an important demand for this in Turkey.”

Following his speech, Minister Avcı and his delegation visited the factory producing locomotives at the Turkish Locomotive Industry Inc. (TÜLOMSAŞ).
